2014 Harley-Davidson SuperLow 1200T Preview

Harley-Davidson revealed the new SuperLow 1200T, adding a light-touring Sportster model to its already impressively growing 2014 product lineup. Equipped with a detachable windscreen and quick-detach saddlebags and a price starting at $11,799, the SuperLow 1200T becomes the smallest and most affordable touring model among Harley-Davidson’s current offerings.

“It’s been a fantastic six months for us,” said Matt Levatich, Harley-Davidson Motor Company President and Chief Operating Officer. “First Project RUSHMORE, then Harley-Davidson Street, now the new SuperLow 1200T and Low Rider models – all are the result of being customer led and delivering riders the technical prowess and rebellious spirit that they want infused in each and every new Harley.”

Unlike the similarly named 883cc SuperLow, the new touring model is powered by Harley-Davidson’s 1200cc Evolution V-Twin engine claiming 71 ft-lb. at 3500 rpm, giving it more grunt for longer trips. The front suspension is tuned to offer a comfortable ride when carrying luggage or a passenger, while the rear suspension allows preload adjustability without the need for tools or removing the lockable black vinyl saddlebags.

Harley-Davidson says the ergonomics are calibrated for riders from 5’1″ to 5’7″ in height, offering an easy reach to the ground as well as the hand and foot controls. The 14-inch polycarbonate windshield can be adjusted to suit the rider’s height, while mini footboards offer a comfortable foot position for both rider and passenger, with a rider foot position three inches farther forward than on the SuperLow 883.

The 1200T comes standard with Harley-Davidson’s Reduced reach two-up touring seat which positions the rider further forward and offers a narrower front, making it easier to reach the ground. At 26.1 inches, the seat height is slightly higher than the regular SuperLow’s 25.5 inches, but it should still provide a good fit for shorter riders.

“The SuperLow 1200T is a new motorcycle driven by the voice of our customers, and by customer action,” says Jennifer Gersch, Harley-Davidson Product Planning Manager. “Many riders seeking an entry point to the touring experience have been putting together a bike like this on their own. We’ve added ergonomic adjustments and a selection of touring accessories to a motorcycle platform that is already popular with our customers. They can tour on a great-looking motorcycle that offers performance and inspires confidence, while experiencing those life-defining moments that can only be encountered on the open road.”

With a claimed running weight of 599 pounds, the SuperLow 1200T represents Harley-Davidson’s lightest touring model, weighing about 118 pounds less than Harley-Davidson’s the Dyna Switchback. With a claimed fuel economy of 48 mpg, the SuperLow 1200T offers a range of 216 miles on a full 4.5-gallon tank, about 18.6 miles farther than the Switchback despite carrying 0.2 gallons less fuel.

Other standard features include braided stainless steel brake lines, black and silver split five-spoke aluminum wheels, Michelin Scorcher 11T tires (120/70 ZR-18 59W up front and 150/70 ZR-17 69W at the rear) and the same new hand control and instrument updates introduced with the rest of the 2014 Sportster lineup.

Harley-Davidson is charging $11,799 for the SuperLow 1200T in Vivid Black, with an additional $315 for the Candy Orange option or an extra $535 for the two-tone Birch White/Midnight Pearl. The H-D Smart Security System with a keyless ignition is offered as a factory-installed option for another $395 while ABS adds another $795.
